productive with your Macintosh. The following manual explains the installation, features and usage of DPI-On-The-Fly software.
DPI-On-The-Fly software offers resolution switching capability when connecting a NEC MultiSync display product to an Apple Macintosh Quadra 605, 610, 650, 660AV, 700, 800, 840 AV, 900, 950, Macintosh Centris 610, 650, 660 AV, Mac LC III, LC 475 or the Mac Display Card 8•24.
The Macintosh computers mentioned above have on-board video circuitry that support multiple resolutions. The Mac Display Card 8•24 is a NuBus™ video card that also offers multiple resolutions. DPI-On-The-Fly software used with NEC MultiSync display products offer Macintosh users the ability to customize their desktop. This is done by selecting one of many display modes or resolutions from the on-board video of the system, or the Display Card 8•24, that best fit application needs. This can only be achieved by using a display device that supports multiple display modes like NEC’s MultiSync products with DPI-On-The-Fly software.
Installing DPI-On-The-Fly® Software
This section describes the installation of DPI-On-The-Fly software.
1. First, connect your NEC MultiSync display product to the video port on the back of the Mac Quadra 605, 610, 650, 660AV, 700, 800, 840 AV, 900, 950, Mac Centris 610, 650, 660 AV, Mac LC III, LC 475 or the Mac Display Card 8•24.
When using DPI-On-The-Fly with a V or FGe display, you must use the FG/Mac 640x480 cable adapter. This is in the MultiSync FG/Mac Configuration Kit. To receive a free MultiSync FG/Mac Configuration Kit please call 312-622-7427. When connecting a 5FGp or 6FGp to your Macintosh, simply use MultiCable™ which is in the display box. Please refer to your MultiSync user’s manual for further assistance connecting to Macintosh or call NEC Technical Support at 1-800-388-8888.
2. To install DPI-On-The-Fly software simply double click on the installer icon. This will automatically install the software in your control panels folder.
Note: If you have changed the name of a previously installed version of DPI resident in your system, you will need to trash it before installing this new version.
3. At this time restart your Macintosh. This will initialize DPI-On-The-Fly software with the video capabilities of your Macintosh. When your system restarts the display output will default to 640x480 resolution. DPI-On-The-Fly software is now ready to switch resolutions for you. Please read the next section “Using DPI-On-The-Fly® Software.”
Using DPI-On-The-Fly® Software with On-Board Video
This section explains how to use DPI-On-The-Fly software on a Macintosh Quadra 605, 610, 650, 660AV, 700, 800, 840 AV, 900, 950, Centris 610, 650, 660 AV and LC III and LC 475 computers. Please follow along to learn how the software operates.
1. After restarting your Macintosh computer upon installing the software, double click on the DPI-On-The-Fly software icon in the Control Panels folder.
This will initiate the software.
Hotkey
DPI-On-The-Fly Software can also be accessed by selecting hotkeys. Simply press the “Hotkey” button in the DPI dialog box to create your hotkeys sequence. Upon selecting this button, press the key or keys desired to activate the software. One or two keys are recommended for a sequence. A modifier key can be used if desired. The hotkeys selected will be displayed in the Hotkey dialog box. Select cancel to leave the hotkeys unchanged. Please use the DPI-On-The-Fly software hotkeys only at the finder level. If used in an application, the DPI hotkeys may invoke an application specific function.
2. Next, select the NEC MultiSync display product connected to your Macintosh computer.
Note: The 15" NEC MultiSync® 3FG™ color monitor, only offered in Europe, and the MultiSync 3PG™ do not support 832x624, 1024x768, and 1152x870 display modes. The 15" MultiSync® 3V™, 3FGx™, 3FGe™, 4FG™ monitors do not support 1024x768 and 1152x870. The 15" MultiSync 4FGe™ and 17" 5FGe™ monitors do not support 1152x870 display mode.
3. After you have selected the MultiSync display product connected to your Mac, you can select a display mode. You can choose 832x624, 640x480 on the Mac LC III, 1152x870, 832x624, 640x480 on the Quadra 700/900, 1152x870, 1024x768, 832x624, 640x480 on the Quadra 605, 610, 650, 660AV, 800, 840 AV, 950, Centris 610, 650, 660 AV and LC 475. Not all the resolutions listed are supported by all NEC MultiSync products. Please refer to your monitor user’s manual.
4. To select a display mode, simply position the pointer over the resolution desired in the display mode list and click the mouse. This is located in the middle section of the dialog box. Now select OK. The screen will fade out and back into the new resolution instantaneously. This is called “Switching-On-the-Fly!”
5. To switch the resolution again, simply access DPI-On-The-Fly software described in step 1. Make your new display mode selection and click OK. Watch the screen fade out and back into the new resolution. Selection of new resolution can be done as many times as desired without restarting your Macintosh. Open windows and icons on the desktop will be repositioned in the most optimal way when a display mode change is made. If you decided not to make a new resolution change while in the DPI-On-The-Fly software dialog box, just select “Cancel.”
Macintosh AV Users
Macintosh AV users can take advantage of multiple resolutions by using DPI-On-The-Fly software. However, if the AV user wants to access the TV functionality of the AV, the “Options” button must be selected in the “Monitors Control Panel.” This will give users access to the Built-in Video dialog Box.
Using DPI-On-The-Fly® Software with a Macintosh Display Card 8•24
This section explains how to use DPI-On-The-Fly software with a Macintosh using a Mac Display Card 8•24. Please follow along to learn how the software operates.
1. After restarting your Macintosh computer upon installing the software, double click on the DPI-On-The-Fly software icon in the Control Panels folder. This will initiate the software.
Hotkey

System Specifications
DPI-On-The-Fly software is designed for the NEC MultiSync V, FG, FGe, FGp and PG display products used with one of several Macintosh configurations listed:
DPI-On-The-Fly supports the Mac Display Card 8•24 running in a NuBus Macintosh operating System 7.0 or greater. When using DPI-On-The-Fly software with the Macintosh Display Card 8•24, make sure the card has version B ROM installed. If the ROM chip is not version B, DPI-On-The-Fly software will not function properly. To update your Display Card 8•24 call an Apple Authorized Dealer or Apple Computer for assistance.
Video RAM Configuration
DPI-On-The-Fly software will function with any Video Ram configuration in your Macintosh computer. Different Video Ram configurations will give you different color capabilities. Please refer to your Macintosh Reference Manual for details.
VERY IMPORTANT
R Key
If you select a MultiSync display product, while configuring the software, that does not correspond to the one connected to your Macintosh, your MultiSync display might not synchronize properly after making a display mode change. If your screen is not readable after making a change, restart your Macintosh while holding down the “r” key. This process will restore your desktop to the 640x480 display format. Please make sure you have now selected the correct display product connected to your system.

Software License Agreement
BY COMMENCING USE OF THIS PRODUCT YOU AGREE TO BECOME BOUND BY THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF THIS AGREEMENT.
LICENSE
You may:
a. Use the software on a single machine.
b. For software distributed on magnetic media, copy the Software only for backup purposes, or to use it in conjunction with other software, in support of your use of the Software on the single machine, provided that you reproduce all copyright and other proprietary notices that are on the original copy of the Software provided to you. Any portion of the Software used in conjunction with another program will continue to be subject to the terms and conditions of this Agreement.
c. Transfer the Software and all rights under this Agreement to another party together with a copy of this Agreement if the other party agrees to accept the terms and conditions of this Agreement. If you transfer the Software, you must at the same time either transfer all copies in any form to the same party or destroy any copies not transferred.
RESTRICTIONS
You may not use, disclose, copy, modify, rent, lease, loan, resell, network or transfer the Software, or any copy, modification or merged portion thereof, in whole or in part, except as expressly provided for in this Agreement. Any attempt to transfer any of the rights, duties or obligations thereunder except as expressly provided for in this Agreement is void.
The Software contains trade secrets of NEC Technologies, Inc. and to protect them you agree not to decompile, reverse engineer, disassemble or otherwise reduce the Software to a human perceivable form.
TERM
This Agreement is effective until terminated. You may terminate it at any time by destroying the Software together with all copies, modifications and merged portions in any form. This Agreement will immediately and automatically terminate without notice if you fail to comply with any term or condition of this Agreement. You agree upon termination to promptly destroy the Software together with all copies in any form.
GOVERNMENT LICENSEE
If you are acquiring the Software on behalf of any unit or agency of the United States Government, the following provisions apply:
The Government acknowledges NEC Technologies, Inc.’s representation that the Software and its documentation were developed at private expense and no part of them is in the public domain. The Government acknowledges NEC Technologies, Inc.’s representation that the Software is “Restricted Computer Software” as that term is defined in Clause 52.227-19 of the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR) and is “Commercial Computer Software” as that term is defined in Subpart 227.471 of the Department of Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS). The Government agrees that:
(i) if the Software is supplied to the Department of Defense (DoD), the Software is classified as “Commercial Computer Software”
ƒand the Government is acquiring only “restricted rights” in the Software and its documentation as that term is defined in Clause 52.227-7013(c)(1) of the DFARS, and
(ii) if the Software is supplied to any unit or agency of the United States Government other than DoD, the Government’s rights in the Software and its documentation will be as defined in Clause 52.227-19(c)(2) of the FAR.
EXPORT LAW ASSURANCES
You acknowledge and agree that the Software is subject to
restrictions and controls imposed by the United States Export Administration Act (the “Act”) and the regulations thereunder. You agree and certify that neither the Software nor any direct product thereof is being or will be acquired, shipped, transferred or re-exported, directly or indirectly, into any country prohibited by the Act and the regulations thereunder or will be used for any purpose prohibited by the same.
GENERAL
This Agreement will be governed by the laws of the State of Illinois, except for that body of law dealing with conflicts of law.
